As is common in New England, the library is an independent non-profit corporation that fulfills an essential municipal function.  It is managed by members of the community to serve the needs and expectations of the community.  But only about half of its operating costs funding has been provided by the town of Hopkinton, and the library is dependent on state grants, fund-raising activities, annual Friends Fund contributions by town people and businesses, public-service groups, charitable foundations, and general and memorial contributions for the remainder.
